With 10 million Canadians struggling to afford food, food insecurity has reached crisis proportions. Now, rising food costs resulting from cross-border tariffs threaten to make a bad situation even worse.

Fortunately, Second Harvest, Canada’s largest food rescue organization, is working diligently to address this situation. By collecting surplus food donated by farms and other businesses, Second Harvest stocks the shelves of charities and schools who feed the hungry in our midst.

For these reasons, First National Cares, our company’s official giving program, is a proud and dedicated supporter of Second Harvest. We proved it once again this spring.

Over six days, 260 community-minded members of the First National team descended on Second Harvest’s Toronto warehouse to sort 26,930 pounds of potatoes, 5,600 pounds of carrots and 8,625 pounds of shallots and onions.

It was a clear demonstration of teamwork at its finest and represented our largest ever volunteer effort for a single cause.

But it won’t be our last. First National Cares teams across Canada will be active once again in support of local Second Harvest branches and food insecure Canadians later this year. We can’t wait!
