Canada officially designated February as Black History Month in 1995. In the 30 years since then, celebrations have taken place across our country to recognize and appreciate Black culture, arts and contributions to Canadian society.
It is a tradition for First National to join in those celebrations. This year, we did so in our own special way. With the theme Community Connections: Honouring Black History Through Knowledge, we hosted special people and events.
On February 11th, internationally recognized motivational speaker Anthony McLean connected virtually to all First National offices across Canada to deliver “Black History: Then and Now.” It was an entertaining and enriching experience for all.
We held noon-hour events commemorating Black History Month where we were fed and feted by BoomJsCuisine and The Jamaican Association in Montréal and by The Heart Break Chef, Butter and Spice Bakeshop and the ANFGC Connect Worship Team in Toronto.
We were informed and inspired by First National’s own Sami Mutahar, Stephanie Allen, and Rachel Mark who told us what Black History Month means to them on a personal level.
We thank the many people inside and outside First National for making Black History Month 2025 both meaningful and enlightening. Special thanks to Traces, our Employee Resource Group, for leading the way and helping us to demonstrate our commitment to inclusive engagement and empowerment through connection.
Please join us in remembering our Black History throughout the year.
