Manager, Third Party Underwriting
Where I started:
I have been working at First National for 12 years. My first role was in the residential underwriting department as a Fax Administrator before I transitioned to my current role as a Manager. To me, every day brings something new and exciting. I find the diversity very fulfilling.
How I grew:
If you’re motivated, First National encourages growth and offers many opportunities to develop your career. Throughout my career here, I have worked with amazing people and inspiring managers. I found the job shadowing to be really valuable because you get firsthand exposure to the daily ins and outs of a particular role. The training on First National’s Learning Network is excellent. The combination of training and practical learning is what enabled me to excel and move forward. I was also given the opportunity to take a mortgage agent course at Seneca College, which helped me understand the industry and acted as a springboard for my progress and movement within the company.
The support I received:
Management consistently encouraged me and motivated me to pursue my goals. We worked together to clarify my goals and build a path to get there, which included job shadowing, training and continuing education. My managers always made time for me and provided comprehensive answers to my many questions.

I really appreciate the openness at First National – both in the physical space and the culture. It’s conducive to engaging with your colleagues and asking questions. I’ve grown a lot as a professional and person here, which is why I’ve stayed for 12 years. First National is a great place to work because there is a lot of room to grow and develop. While we value professionalism, we also have a lot of fun at the many social events throughout the year. This is a company that attracts good people who are friendly and helpful.
My advice and perspective:
Constant learning contributes to success. With policies and guidelines changing frequently, it’s critical to stay up to date. I also think openness is a key to success here. Every day is something new, so be open to what comes your way. Do your best in your role and try to exceed to the best of your ability. And talk to your colleagues. A lot. Explore how you can improve and position yourself most effectively for your next role. Keep learning and networking within the company. And know what kind of professional you want to be. For me, being a professional means having goals, being detail oriented, looking for results, staying driven and remaining focused. And I learned that from my time here and from seeing the example of so many great professionals that I get to collaborate with.
